Meta page titles should be more than a quick insight into the content of the page. They should be descriptive and to the point but above all they should be friendly to search engines like Google or Bing. If your meta page title is simply ‘Homepage’ Or ‘About Us’ then your doing it very wrong and we recommend that you read on.

When looking through search results be it on Google or Bing or any other search engine, the results are listed by relevance and the meta titles are shown in bold with meta a description underneath.  Meta data is stored on each website as text elements. These include but are not limited to page titles, page descriptions and keywords. A search engine will use these meta elements to index and rank your webpage against the users search query.

Coming up with a the ideal title can be tricky. Hours can be spent writing and re writing a title as the page develops. Here are some pro tips to help you come up with the perfect title.

Include more than just the page title

Page titles can include additional information about the site or business. Including location details is a great way to tell the user where you are at a glance. Including the business name is also a good idea as it increases the number of times your name is mentioned and hopefully remembered by the user. Adding location information is a great way for local businesses to attract the attention of a  local customers as they can quickly dismiss any results that are out of their reach.

Separate and simplify Meta Page Titles

Using vertical bars in are page title helps to separate information about the site, page and other details. For instance a page title for a home page could look like this : Websomatic | Web And Mobile Development | Gloucester UK

Here I am using the convention <SITE_NAME> | <PAGE_TITLE> | <LOCATION> It is important to keep this convention throughout your pages.

Its not just about search engines

Meta titles are shown on browser tabs and in task bars so make sure they are eye-catching and easy to read. Imagine a browser with five open tabs and your site is the third one.  What makes your title stand out more than the other four.

Keep meta page titles short and sweet

Its recommended to keep meta titles to about 50 to 60 characters long. This includes spaces and separators. Punctuation shouldn’t be included as a title should be a punchy headline.

A meta title won’t look the same in each search result as search engines highlight or make words bolder that match the searched keywords. This changes the size and apperance of the meta title.

Answer the question the customer is asking

How many times have you asked Google a question and clicked on the answer in the search results? Now think about the questions your customers may be asking about your site, products and/or services. Where is Company X, What are the opening times for X. Your meta titles should reflect the answers to these questions. For example the answer to the question, Is Websomatic open on a Sunday could be displayed in the following  format:
